Ryne Sandberg Dies at 65: Baseball Mourns the Loss of a Cubs Legend

The baseball world is mourning the death of Hall of Famer and Chicago Cubs legend Ryne Sandberg, The baseball community is grieving the loss of Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg, who died Monday at age 65 after battling cancer.

Known to fans as “Ryno,” Sandberg started with the Phillies but became a star after the team traded him to the Cubs in 1982. Just two years later, he broke out with an MVP season in 1984 and began a streak of 10 straight All-Star selections. He also won nine Gold Gloves and earned a reputation as one of the best second basemen in the game.

“With great sadness, we share that Ryne Sandberg has passed away today,” the Chicago Cubs posted on social media.

Although Sandberg never won a World Series, he became one of the most beloved Cubs of all time. He joined the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2005, three years after becoming eligible.


His Cancer Fight

In January 2024, Sandberg revealed he had metastatic prostate cancer. Doctors declared him cancer-free in August, but the disease returned quickly and spread to other organs by December.

Despite his condition, Sandberg threw out the first pitch at Wrigley Field in April 2025. In his last public message, he said he was focusing on spending time with his family and “making the most of every day.”


The Tributes

Players, fans, and baseball officials quickly shared their memories. Cubs president Jed Hoyer called him a “Chicago superhero.” Former teammates Jon Lester and Kerry Wood wore Sandberg jerseys at Wrigley Field to honor him.

Sandberg also managed the Phillies from 2013 to 2015. His love for baseball never faded.

Though he’s gone, Sandberg’s influence remains strong. His name will live on in the hearts of Cubs fans and across the sport.
