Crystal Palace lifted their first FA Community Shield with a penalty shootout win over Liverpool at Wembley on 10 August 2025.
Palace twice came from behind in normal time to draw 2-2. In the shootout, Dean Henderson saved penalties from Alexis Mac Allister and Harvey Elliott. Justin Devenny then converted to secure a 3-2 victory.
Liverpool’s new signings Hugo Ekitike and Jeremie Frimpong scored their first goals for the club. Palace answered through Jean-Philippe Mateta’s penalty and Ismaila Sarr’s close-range strike.
The match carried extra emotion for Liverpool. It was their first competitive game since the deaths of Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva in a July car crash. A minute’s silence took place before kick-off, though some Palace fans interrupted it. Liverpool’s players wore a “Forever 20” badge in Jota’s honour.
Liverpool, last season’s Premier League champions, will face Bournemouth at Anfield on 15 August. The club plans further tributes to Jota during that match.
