Detroit Tigers second baseman Gleyber Torres would love to team up with Arizona Diamondbacks third baseman Eugenio Suárez again — this time in Detroit.
The Tigers are actively exploring a trade for Suárez before the MLB deadline on Thursday, July 31 at 6 p.m. They’re not alone in the pursuit. Other contenders include the Cincinnati Reds, Chicago Cubs, Milwaukee Brewers, Philadelphia Phillies, and Seattle Mariners.
“If he comes here at some point, it’s going to be awesome,” Torres said.
“He treats people the right way. He’s easy to talk to. He always wants to help the players. It would be a really, really good addition for us.”
Strong Stats, Stronger Character
Suárez is enjoying another powerful season. Over 105 games, he’s batting .248 with 36 home runs and a league-leading 87 RBIs. Although he has struck out 116 times (26.8%), he’s also drawn 29 walks (6.7%). Like Torres, he’s set to become a free agent after the 2025 season.
Torres, who signed a one-year, $15 million deal with Detroit last December, knows Suárez well from their time together with Team Venezuela in the World Baseball Classic.
“I think he’s a better person than a player,” Torres said.
“He’s humble, awesome, and I’ve known him for many years.”
Returning to His Roots
Suárez, originally signed by the Tigers out of Venezuela in 2008, debuted in MLB with Detroit in 2014. After 85 games, however, the club traded him to Cincinnati. Despite that, he still holds fond memories of his first team.
“To finish where everything started, it would be cool,” Suárez said during the All-Star Game in mid-July.
“It would mean a lot to me.”
The Tigers Want to Win Now
Currently leading the AL Central with a 62–46 record, the Tigers hold a nine-game lead over Cleveland. They’re also just 1.5 games behind the Toronto Blue Jays for the American League’s best record.
With the playoffs in sight, Torres expects president of baseball operations Scott Harris to bolster the roster.
“Whatever good players come in to help us reach the postseason and win a championship — that’s the best deal,” he said.
“I don’t know if it’s going to be Eugenio or not, but if it is, that would be awesome in every aspect.”
