A recently released WWE star is officially back in the ring. Eddy Thorpe, now once again performing under his real name Karl Fredericks, made a surprise appearance at a major independent wrestling event this past weekend. He delivered a fiery promo that signaled his renewed passion for wrestling—and his frustration with WWE.

Return to the Independent Scene

Fredericks, who was released from WWE on May 2, 2025, returned to action on Saturday, July 26, at the “DPW x Prestige x West Coast Pro: Cruel Summer” show in San Francisco, California. Speaking to the crowd, he confirmed he had rediscovered his love for professional wrestling and declared his intent to take back control of his career.

A Shot at WWE and NXT Creative

During his promo, Fredericks appeared to take aim at WWE, specifically NXT’s head of creative, Shawn Michaels. He referenced the “cowboy sitting in Orlando,” a not-so-subtle jab at Michaels. He also criticized the creative direction behind his former NXT character, Eddy Thorpe, stating, “I’m not their Indian.”

Fredericks had previously voiced concerns over the Thorpe gimmick, which heavily leaned into his Native American heritage. He felt the character lacked depth and shared that he had pitched alternative ideas—such as a storyline focused on his obsession with the North American Championship—but they were not used.

His NXT Run and Departure

Although Fredericks received some spotlight in NXT, including a memorable “NXT Underground” match against Damon Kemp, he never felt creatively satisfied. His recent remarks make it clear that he’s ready to move on from that chapter and embrace a more authentic version of himself in the independent scene.

Back to His Roots as the “Alpha Wolf”

Before joining WWE in early 2023, Fredericks was a standout in New Japan Pro-Wrestling’s LA Dojo. Trained by the legendary Katsuyori Shibata, he earned a reputation as the “Alpha Wolf,” known for his tough, no-nonsense style and hard-hitting matches. His fans admired this intense, athletic persona, and many hoped to see that same energy in WWE.

Now that he’s back on the indies, Fredericks appears set to reclaim that identity. After describing himself as being in “vacation mode” following his WWE release, he made it clear on Saturday that the break is over—and the “Alpha Wolf” is ready to hunt again.
