Milestone Moment for Mariners Catcher
SEATTLE — Cal Raleigh made history again on Monday night.
With a solo home run in the first inning against Padres starter JP Sears, Raleigh hit his 50th homer of the season — becoming just the second switch hitter in MLB history to reach that mark. The only other? Yankees legend Mickey Mantle.
New Record for Catchers
Sunday, Raleigh had already broken the single-season home run record for catchers, previously held by Salvador Perez (48 HRs in 2021). Monday’s blast only extended that record, further cementing Raleigh’s place in the books.
Although he played as a designated hitter in Monday’s game, his primary position remains catcher. Raleigh went 1-for-4 as the Mariners defeated the Padres 9-6.
Switch-Hitting Power on Display
Raleigh, 28, also achieved a feat no one else ever has.
According to ESPN, he is the first player in MLB history to hit at least 20 home runs from both sides of the plate in the same season — a testament to his rare power and versatility.
Homerun Leader
Raleigh now leads all of Major League Baseball in home runs.
He holds a five-homer advantage over Kyle Schwarber (Phillies) and Shohei Ohtani (Dodgers), who are tied for second place.
A Win and a Trophy
Following the win, Raleigh also held the “Vedder Cup” — a fun, unofficial trophy awarded to the winner of the Mariners-Padres season series. The trophy is named after Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder, who has ties to both San Diego and Seattle.
