Justin Rose Wins FedEx St. Jude Championship in Sudden-Death Playoff

Justin Rose edged J.J. Spaun in a tense three-hole playoff to win the FedEx St. Jude Championship on Aug. 10. The victory marked his first PGA Tour title since 2023 and his 12th overall.

Rose, 45, also became the oldest PGA Tour winner since Phil Mickelson’s 2021 PGA Championship triumph at age 50. Only Vijay Singh was older when winning a FedExCup Playoff event. Rose now trails only Rory McIlroy for most PGA Tour wins by a European in the modern era.

A Familiar Playoff Stage at TPC Southwind
The tournament produced its fourth playoff in five years. In previous editions, Abraham Ancer (2021), Will Zalatoris (2022), and Lucas Glover (2023) all claimed titles in extra holes.

Rose overcame Scottie Scheffler and Tommy Fleetwood, who tied for third at 15-under. Fleetwood, the 36-hole and 54-hole leader, bogeyed the 17th on Sunday and remained winless after 162 PGA Tour starts.

Rose’s Late Charge
Spaun posted a 5-under 65 in the final round to reach 16-under. Rose trailed Fleetwood by three shots with four holes left. He then birdied Nos. 14 through 17 to force the playoff. Both Rose and Spaun missed short birdie putts on the 72nd hole.

They played the 18th three straight times in the playoff. The first two ended in pars, the third in matching birdies. Officials then moved the hole location, and Rose sank an 11-foot birdie putt. Spaun missed from just over seven feet, handing Rose the win.

Battling Illness
Rose revealed he had felt unwell since arriving in Memphis. He skipped all practice rounds and withdrew from Wednesday’s pro-am. “Must have picked something up traveling,” he said. “Monday and Tuesday I wasn’t feeling great.”

Fleetwood’s Frustration Grows
Fleetwood admitted the near-miss was another tough blow. In June, he three-putted the final hole at the Travelers Championship to lose by one. “Getting close,” he said afterward. “That’s the good side. But obviously I’m disappointed.”
