Son Heung-min Leaves Tottenham After a Decade, Set to Break MLS Transfer Record

Son Heung-min has officially ended his 10-year spell with Tottenham Hotspur. The Korean forward is set to join Los Angeles FC (LAFC) for $26 million, the highest transfer fee in Major League Soccer history.

An Emotional Farewell in Seoul

Son called leaving Spurs the “most difficult decision” of his career. Tottenham are helping him secure a new club, with LAFC emerging as the likely destination.

On Sunday, August 3, Son received a heartfelt send-off at Seoul World Cup Stadium during a friendly between Tottenham and Newcastle. Nearly 65,000 fans filled the stands.

The match ended 1–1, but the highlight came when Son walked off the pitch in the second half. Teammates, opponents, and fans applauded him. He sat quietly on the bench, unable to hide his emotions.

Big Contract in the United States

Although the move is not yet official, U.S. media report that Son is close to signing with LAFC. The club plans to pay him $8.7 million per year, making him the second-highest paid player in MLS, behind Lionel Messi ($20.4 million).

The deal will also give Son extra income from shirt sales, TV rights, and sponsorships — just like Messi’s contract. The 33-year-old rejected a $30 million per year offer from Saudi clubs before choosing the MLS move.

Looking Ahead to the 2026 World Cup

Son has confirmed he will play for South Korea at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, hosted by the U.S., Mexico, and Canada. Moving to MLS should help him adapt ahead of the tournament.

A Stellar Spurs Career

During his decade with Tottenham, Son scored 173 goals and delivered 101 assists in 454 matches. He played a decisive role in Spurs’ Europa League victory last season.
